Time out

Knowing full well that I should keep concentrate on getting ready and quite certain that I will regret it later, I have been taking a little bit of time out between, packing, writing, printing, kitting and more packing...

I drew this design up a few weeks ago and have simply been itching to get it started. Yes, it is another crewel piece - this time a little larger than the previous few I have done.

The lower little leaf is done...

The first petals in splashes of red, coral and raspberry pink - yum

The main trunk is finished too. I tried a new way of filling it - overlapping and interlocking fan-shapes in different shades of green. I think it kind of works but I left the stitches quite open and am now contemplating if I should redo it with the stitches close together to the ground doesn't show through.

Happy Stitching

  1. I love your new piece Anna. Sometimes we just have to take time out for ourselves during the rush to getting ready to go places and allow ourselves a bit of creative 'space' in the busyness of life. I like the 'fan-shapes' including the little glimpses of the fabric, it would be a pity to take it out; but you know best what you are happy with.

    Take care and enjoy!

    1. The trunk is growing on me so it will probably stay. It always surprises me how the overall look of a design changes with every new area stitched. We'll see...

  3. love this piece Anna. I am just beginning a new crewel piece (Not one of yours sadly) and it's soooo complicated. But I realise looking at yours that I can do blanket stitch, feather stitch, stem and so on instead of the super hard bits that will kill me without instruction. It was a brilliant 'Aha' moment. Thank you so much. Also love the stem you have done. Looks amazing. Have a wonderful trip - it will be filled with inspiration. Will you be blogging whilst away?

    1. You have got me curious - what is the piece you are working on? What I love so much about crewel embroidery is that really anything goes and you can use whatever stitches you love the most. Happy stitching. I will try an blog a bit while I am away and will be putting pics on facebook also.

  5. Where do you get the inspiration for your designs? I am learning crewel work and am getting to a stage where I want to try my own designs

    1. Oh, that is a tricky one. My inspiration comes from many places but probably mainly from books, fabric prints and patterns. I have bucket loads of images stashed away. I find Pinterest a great place to find ideas. Once my mind start rolling and the pencil begins to wander across the paper, it often kind of take on a life of its own. I am sorry it might sound a little 'airy-fairy' but that is pretty much it.
Best of luck with your stitching adventures - the little sheep are looking really cute. Anna
